How to Make Your Garage Door Wider

Have you just bought a new car and were hoping to keep it in the garage instead outside where it is exposed to theft or damage?

Or are you fed up with trying to squeeze your car through your existing garage opening?

The answer to this common problem is to install a sectional or roller garage door type which is ideally mounted behind your brickwork opening as opposed to in between it, this will instantly gain you around 6 inches (150mm) to your drive through width making it far easier to get your car in the garage where it’s safer and more convenient.

Or if you have a double garage,  you could consider replacing your pair of garage doors with one larger double door.

You will need to support the roof with a steel beam once you remove the central brick pier, so you may need to get a qualified structural engineer to assess the load that the beam will need to take.

The building work can take as little as one day to do, but can take up to 3 days.  You will need to secure your garage whilst any new brickwork ‘cures’.  Once the cement is dry the new door can be installed which will take one day to complete.

Once the beam is in place you will have a much larger garage opening to comfortably drive your cars through.  The ideal doors for large spans are sectional garage doors as they are rigid and strong and will not bow or warp like up and over doors can over time.  You can see an example a sectional garage door replacing a pair of twin doors.

Sectional Garage Doors with TUV Certification

What is the TUV certification is and what does it mean? The Technischer Überwachungs-Verein, (Technical Inspection Association in English) is an independent German organisation that assesses the safety of all kinds of products to protect people and the environment against hazards.

TUV certificates are recognised around the world for safety and quality assurance.  Teckentrup (Carteck), Hormann and Novoferm sectional garage doors are all tested to the TUV standard to guarantee your safety and product quality. Each of these sectional door designs have finger trap protection as well as reliable saftey cut outs on encountering an obstacle.

The Hormann range of electric garage door openers will also sense if a child (or grown up!) is hanging on to the door for a thrill as it opens and cut out to prevent being crushed in the mechanism. Hormann sectional doors also have a patented spring safety device.  In the event of a spring breaking, the door is prevented from crashing to the floor.  The doors are also prevented from ‘derailing’ with a patented roller design. Sectional doors are by far the most reliable, secure and safe garage doors available.
