Hormann Ecostar vs the Mighty Promatic Garage Door Opener

What’s the difference between these two popular garage door openers?

Well, firstly let’s talk about the similarities, they are both produced in Hormann’s state of the art factory in Germany giving you the assurance of German quality and engineering.  They are also ideal for up and over (retractable) or sectional doors.

The Promatic is available with a side hinged adaptor kit which allows you to open a pair of traditional outward opening side hung garage doors.

Both come with 2 remote controls as standard and have all the essential safety features like obstacle detection and automatic reverse.

The guarantee is the main difference between them and the track (boom) is better quality on the Promatic giving it superior forced entry protection and reliability. The Promatic has a 5 year guarantee on the motor and 2 years on the radio equipment.  The Ecostar only has a 2 year warranty.

The Ecostar has been designed and built to a price to meet the budget market and this is reflected in the general build quality.

The Promatic works on a more secure 868.3 MHz frequency where as the Ecostar uses 433.92 Mhz.  If you want a budget garage door opener and don’t want to spend more than £200 the Ecostar is by far the best available especially when compared to cheap Far Eastern imports that may not have the proper European Safety approval which could lead to serious injury or even death.

One important thing is that the Hormann Ecostar will not currently work with an emergency release which you will need if you do not have an alternative entrance into your garage in case of a power failure. Hormann are working on this design issue.

The Ecostar is great value for £167, but personally if you can stretch your budget a bit I would pay that little bit more for the Promatic for your peace of mind.
